History of the United States Air Force Security Forces / Cowart Electric Power Distribution Panel [PDP] Kit and 6K Generator

09/01/2001     911

As a result on September 11, 2001, Security Forces (SF) were deployed all over the world in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

Redeployment and After Action Report (MR):

Upon redeployment home the Director of Security Forces Air Combat Command developed a Community of Practice (COP) website to receive immediate feedback and MRs from returning Airmen regarding their Equipment and Training during their deployments. Thus, giving the Director the needed feedback to meet the needs of rapidly changing wartime mission. The COP would allow the SFcareerfield to find successful and non-successful existing equipment or training requirements within its structure. This awareness would allow the ACC staff to develop a plan and move forward towards bettering SF Equipment and Training.

Equipment Deficiency:

One of the areas discussed on the COP was the capability of Power and Distribution within the Unit Type Codes (UTCs). Most of the deployed SF Units found that they did not have enough power to run their newer radio systems (117F) and technology pieces (TASS/UAy) in their Base Defense Operations Centers (BDOCs) with their current UTC deployment configurations. They found that they were not able to use existing power sources (abandon buildings) at deployed sites and they were not to connect to other generator sets (commercial or military) because of the lack of cord capabilities within their UTCs. The bigger problem was that they could not use their deployed assets. Example: Computers and other BDOC systems were 120-volt and most of the world operates on 240 -volt current. There was also shortage of power cords and cord capabilities (length and dimension) to distribute the power on other post and sleeping quarters.

Requirement:

Through the Security Forces Equipment Weapons Configuration Board (EWCB) and SF Battle Lab at Lackland, Air Force Base. They developed and tested the requirement for more power for SF Unit Type Codes (UTCs) and a requirement for a better distribution of power on the SF UTCs to accommodate the demand of existing SF needs.

Design and Testing:

The 820th Security Forces Group (SFG) Moody Air Force Base in Georgia with the help of Cowart Electric designed, manufactured and tested aPower Distribution Panel kit that would allow SF BOOCs to receive the greatest use of their 6k power and be able to use any existing power capabilities available around the world. The 820th SFG and other units deployed back to Iraq, Afghanistan and Egypt with early versions of the PDPkit and then returned home with their feedback to modify and design the PDPkit and the kit we have today on our Security Forces UTes is a result of all the efforts included on this documnet.

Power Distribution Capabilities:

• Allows the user to use their homestation computers and other 110v UTC technologies at the deployed location
• Allows user to get maximum power capabilities from thei r 6k generator
• Allows the user the ability to distribute power from the generator or other power source and distribute it thought-out their Operations Centers
• Allows the user the capability to use the PDPwith other generators
• Allows the users to use the PDPin conjunction with available power sources
